Does your tween or teen say ‘No’ as an automatic reflex? Do they dismiss your advice and often do the exact opposite? Do you feel powerless in halting their bad choices as they exert independence and ‘learn the hard way?’

If every day feels like a battle, and your child seems to make things unnecessarily difficult, you are not alone. Parenting tweens and teens with ADHD — and enduring their continued efforts to frustrate you at every turn — takes stamina, patience, and compassion. From intense emotional eruptions and friendship drama to snarky attitudes and bold defiance, adolescents with ADHD seem to cycle through self-defeating and self-destructive patterns exacerbated by puberty. These behaviors are ineffective attempts to hide the worry, frustration, hopelessness, and shame that they feel deep inside. How can you join with your adolescent to create and meet meaningful goals related to school and home life?

In this webinar, Sharon Saline, Psy.D., pulls back the curtain and shows you how to talk with kids about what’s really going on, how to create opportunities for collaborative solutions, and how to reduce conflict at home and at school. She will show you effective strategies for avoiding blowouts, improving motivation, and repairing relationship ruptures. You’ll learn practical techniques for transforming stuckness and obstinacy into optimism and cooperation.

In this webinar, you will learn how to…

  1. Understand the biopsychology of adolescent development.
  2. Identify collaborative interventions for self-defeating behavioral and psychological patterns in tweens and teens.
  3. Explain practical, strength-based approaches for dealing with resistant, oppositional kids that foster cooperation.
  4. Develop self-esteem and resilience in challenging adolescents.

Sleep problems are among the most frequent co-occurring disorders in people with ADHD. Research has shown that many people with ADHD even suffer from more than one sleep disorder, often of different etiology. Science has not yet solved the questions arising from these findings, but we do know that sleep loss impairs concentration, memory, mood stability, and the immune system’s functioning, increasing risk for infections and allergies. Not surprisingly, ADHD is associated with many allergies and infections. The importance of good sleep and its association with overall health cannot be overstated.

The good news is that most sleep disorders can be treated effectively, and doing so can reduce ADHD symptoms and lead to improved health and wellness.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • Why people with ADHD commonly suffer with sleep problems and disorders
  • About the different kinds of sleep disorders, including the circadian sleep-wake disorder, delayed sleep phase type, insomnia, restless legs, periodic limb movement disorder and sleep apnea
  • How researchers are working to better understand the close relationship between ADHD and sleep disorders
  • About treatment study findings that show low-dose melatonin, bright light therapy and other interventions may help reduce ADHD symptoms and lead to better overall health.

Some high school seniors, particularly those with ADHD who have experienced persistent academic stress, may benefit from taking a gap year before they begin college, a trade school, or a career. A gap year is a temporary break from higher education. Some students who take a gap year desperately need the time off to decompress, some are uncertain about their direction, and others may want to gain another year of maturity and/or independence before living away at college.

A gap year can provide a teen with the opportunity to work, volunteer, study, travel, and generally take some time to grow and develop. This webinar will provide a basis for caregivers, school counselors, and young people themselves to decide if taking a year off after high school or after a year or two of college is right for their family.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • About the different types of gap year programs most appropriate for neurodivergent students
  • About the benefits and drawbacks of taking a gap year
  • What research data show about students who take a gap year
  • What caregivers should consider, and what counselors might advise, regarding whether a student should pursue a gap year
  • About the growing trend of neurodivergent students who are already in their first or second year of college and decide they want to take a gap year

More and more neurodivergent women are starting their own businesses. But for every female entrepreneur who takes the leap, there are many others who only dream of launching and growing their dream. They wonder whether their ADHD, autism, or related conditions will propel their success or hold them back.

Understand this: There’s a reason why higher rates of neurodivergence are seen among entrepreneurs. People with ADHD have a strong tolerance for risk, an abundance of creativity, brilliant problem-solving skills (due, in part, to the ability to hyperfocus), and resilience — the very traits that drive entrepreneurial success.

Understanding your neurodivergent strengths and struggles is Step One in determining whether the path to entrepreneurship is right for you. In this webinar, you will learn:

  • Why people with ADHD and autism make good entrepreneurs
  • About the advantages and disadvantages of starting a business when you have ADHD
  • How to get started If you’re thinking about becoming a business owner
  • About the unique challenges neurodivergent female business owners face
  • How neurodivergent individuals can harness their unique strengths to overcome these challenges and drive business goals
  • How to build a support network of female entrepreneurs and why it’s important
  • How to promote your business with transparency about your neurodiversity

Episode Description

Banish New Year’s resolutions! (ADHD folks don’t need one more reason to feel guilty or disappointed.) Instead, let’s create practical, ADHD-friendly changes that we can implement and maintain, whether they involve exercise, better sleep habits, or other goals.

ADHD brains like novelty, so sticking to a new routine can be especially difficult. The good news is that we can build on the habits and systems we already use, and if they wobble occasionally, we can get back on track.

Watch this webinar for tips on how to identify an area of your life that could benefit from an upgrade or tweak, narrow the focus to a manageable goal, and then set aside ADHD problem-solving time to establish new behaviors. Kick off your New Year with proven techniques and be the change you want to see in your life.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • Why ADHD brains have a harder time making new habits stick
  • How to create and start with a small goal
  • How to build new habits into existing routines to support your goal
  • Why each step of the process requires an acknowledgment or reward to cement those new habits and stay motivated
  • How to use reminders to get habits to stick
  • How to anticipate and limit distractions in your environment to stay on track

“Epigenetics: Understanding Its Role in ADHD and Future Applications” [Video Replay & Podcast #473] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/genetics-environment-epigenetics-risk-factors-adhd/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/genetics-environment-epigenetics-risk-factors-adhd/?noamp=mobile#respond Wed, 09 Aug 2023 18:51:52 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=336919 Episode Description

ADHD is likely influenced by both genetics and the environment, starting before birth. Research shows this, however the biological mechanisms of ADHD have been puzzling scientists for years. Research involving ADHD and epigenetics — a process that regulates how genes respond to environmental factors like diet, pollution, or stress — is still in its early stages. We do know that these processes are essential for healthy development, and that disruptions are thought to contribute to various health issues, including neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders.

Epigenetic research offers valuable insights into the development of ADHD, which could one day pave the way for improvements in early detection, treatment, and potentially even prevention. Although clinical applications remain in the distant future, these emerging clues hold promise for addressing ADHD more effectively in the long run.

In this webinar, you will:

  • Learn how epigenetic processes regulate the interaction between genes and the environment, shaping our development and overall health
  • Understand the effects of maternal health conditions and risk factors around the prenatal and perinatal periods
  • Discover how epigenetic research is already making an impact in various health fields, improving screening, early disease detection (e.g., cancer), and guiding treatment decisions and drug-effectiveness assessments
  • Hear about lessons learned from new epigenetic research on ADHD and what the future may hold in terms of potential clinical applications

“What Educators Don’t Know About ADHD (and Need To)” [Video Replay & Podcast #472] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/what-educators-dont-know-about-adhd/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/what-educators-dont-know-about-adhd/?noamp=mobile#comments Wed, 02 Aug 2023 20:03:07 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=336705 Episode Description

Given the prevalence of ADHD, every educator should assume they’ll be teaching at least one student with ADHD (diagnosed or not) — likely many more. But, for myriad reasons, few of us receive adequate information and training about recognizing common ADHD characteristics or bringing out the best in students with ADHD.

This webinar will highlight some ADHD facts that educators need to know, and address some of the myths about ADHD in the classroom. Topics include how ADHD might present in girls, the different types of ADHD (and what they might look like in a classroom), executive function and ADHD, working with families of ADHD students, and easy accommodations that will work for ADHD — and other students — in your classroom. We will also address how undiagnosed and/or untreated ADHD, as well as our own perceptions and tolerance levels for ADHD behaviors, might impact a child’s social, emotional, and academic growth.

In this webinar, educators will learn:

  • Commons facts and fallacies about ADHD
  • Surprising ways ADHD might present in the classroom for different populations
  • Why working with families of students with ADHD is important and how to do it well
  • Evidence-based classroom accommodations for students with ADHD (and others) that can be easily implemented

“The Unspoken Truths of Postpartum Depression: Help for Women With and Without ADHD” [Video Replay & Podcast #470] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/postpartum-depression-mental-health-women-adhd/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/postpartum-depression-mental-health-women-adhd/?noamp=mobile#respond Wed, 26 Jul 2023 21:59:09 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=336431 Episode Description

Pregnancy and childbirth are life-altering events, and it is not uncommon for postpartum mood disturbances to impact the mental health of new mothers. Studies suggest that ADHD increases the risk for experiencing postpartum mood disorders (PPMD), a form of postpartum depression (PPD), which are often triggered by dramatic hormonal fluctuations, inadequate sleep, and the new and relentless demands of caring for an infant. Postpartum symptoms may also exacerbate ADHD symptoms in some women and can impact the wellbeing of the entire family.

It is profoundly important that providers who work with new parents and families identify, understand, and support the signs and symptoms of PPD and PPMD, including attention to adequate sleep and other self-care basics, in the earliest stage of infant-parent attachment and provide treatment. It is also important for new parents and other family members to be aware of these symptoms and know when professional help is needed.

In this webinar, providers and caregivers will learn:

  • About the symptoms and causes of PPD and PPMD
  • About the importance of surveillance roughly 6 months after the baby is born, when there is typically less interaction with providers
  • About the conditions — including anxiety, ADHD, and bipolar disorder — that elevate the risk for postpartum difficulties in women
  • How family members can spot red flags for postpartum depression and seek help
  • About the treatment options that can prevent a new mother from worsening symptoms before they become full-blown PPD
  • About the importance of sleep, and how to set up a routine early on

“Unlocking the Future of ADHD: Advances in Research, Diagnosis, & Treatment” [Video Replay & Podcast #468] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/what-causes-adhd-advances-research-diagnosis-treatment/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/what-causes-adhd-advances-research-diagnosis-treatment/?noamp=mobile#respond Thu, 29 Jun 2023 15:12:42 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=334884 Episode Description

The exact causes of ADHD are not yet known. ADHD is believed to be highly heritable —researchers have made strides in recent years identifying genes involved in the disorder — but it is also understood that ADHD may be influenced by non-inherited risk factors, such as trauma and stress. With scientific advances in the next decade or more, and perhaps with the aid of AI, we could see the diagnosis of many more subtypes of ADHD and new kinds of treatments involving novel therapies.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • About the current research involving genetic influences and environmental factors associated with ADHD
  • How scientific discoveries could lead to the recognition of more than a dozen subtypes, and the implication of such findings
  • How scientific advances may one day lead to the prevention of ADHD in utero or in the first two years of life
  • About the future of promising therapies to retrain the brain to compensate for executive function weaknesses stemming from ADHD

Meet the Expert Speaker

Peter S. Jensen, M.D., founded the REACH Institute in 2006 to improve access to mental health care for children by training healthcare professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of common disorders. Previously, Dr. Jensen was an Associate Director of Child and Adolescent Research at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). He left NIMH and served as the founding director of the Center for the Advancement of Children’s Mental Health at Columbia University. While there, he developed the core methods REACH uses today to close the gap between science and practice. The strategy was to bring together leading scientists, mental health experts and agencies, primary care providers, parents, and schools to identify the best scientific findings available to help children. Then Dr. Jensen led REACH to implement, disseminate, and evaluate these methods.

The result was The REACH Institute’s first and most popular course, Patient-Centered Mental Health in Pediatric Primary Care. This course has trained more than 6,000 primary care providers to help children and teens with mental health issues.
